Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
